Planet Hair at New York Fashion Week!

Three stylists from Planet Hair recently returned from a trip that fulfilled one of their lifelong dreams –  working behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week!  Hair stylists Jesse McMillin and Mel Thorton, along with makeup artist Emma Terry, represented Wichita’s Planet Hair salon at the Fall 2017 New York Fashion Week., working with the Aveda Fashion Week team to create the hair and makeup looks that walked down the runway!

Recognizing that working on hair and makeup for these shows is a momentous career achievement for stylists, Planet Hair seized the opportunity to send three people to work with the Aveda team. New York Fashion Week is one of the biggest, most exciting events in the fashion industry. During the week of February 9, around 232,000 people attended more than 500 fashion shows during the New York Fashion Week Fall 2017 and over 2 million watched the shows online to see the trends the international designers have prepared for fall.

“I’ve always wanted to be a part of Fashion Week, since I watched runway shows as a little kid, but I never thought I’d have the opportunity to take part in it,” Terry said. “This was a dream come true!”

To qualify to participate in Fashion Week, Planet Hair asked their stylists to write an essay, telling the salon owners why they wanted to attend Fashion Week. The winning stylists attended training in New York in January, sponsored by Planet Hair. McMillian and Thorton studied with John Raymond, the lead stylist of the Aveda Fashion Week team and Terry worked with Janell Geason, lead makeup artist, to practice the season’s runway trends and techniques.

“I am very happy for the experience, even though it was terrifying and pushed me out of my comfort zone,” remarked Thorton. “I’m grateful to the owners of Planet Hair for making this possible.”

Joining 75 other international Aveda artists, Planet Hair’s artists worked in small teams during Fashion Week, getting models ready for the shows. McMillin and Thorton worked with upcoming designers LeAnne Marshall and Marcel Osterag. McMillin also did hair for a collective show of three designers in the Latinista Show. Terry created makeup looks for the Francesca Liberatore, Calvin Luo and Louis Verdad shows.

“Fashion Week was an incredible experience,” said McMillin. “It was fun being able to do edgier styles than we usually do in the salon, and creating styles I’ve never done before. I’m ready to go back and do it again!”

“We had a blast working with Bonnie! She’s the best!” said co-owner Tod Ernst. “It was great to bring all the energy back from the days of doing shoots with Bonnie for the Eagle.”

If you haven’t been to the Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine, you really owe to yourself to see this beautiful historic garden. The Arboretum was gorgeous and it was a beautiful day to be outside.

Fill Your Heart With Love

LoveInspired by the ancient Greek concepts of love, Aveda’s founder Horst Rechelbacher created the “Love” aroma oil in 1980, evoking the fullness of the feeling with a complex blend of pure essential oils. He believed that love is an authentic expression of the soul, just like essential oils are an authentic expression of flowers and plants, carrying their vital life energy.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Aveda has revived Love Composition Oil, inspired by Horst’s original blend. This sensual aroma is blended from certified organic mixture of jasmine and other  botanicals to use for massage, body, bath, hair and scalp.

Horst RechelbacherIn tribute to Aveda’s founder, who revolutionized the world of beauty with his environmental message, the sales of Love support a cause that was close to his heart. A donation of $4 for every one sold goes to the National Audubon Society for projects that fight climate change and protect wildlife.

The Story of Planet Hair

Here’s how we got our start!

Owners Tod, Linda & Graham

Owners Tod, Linda & Graham

In the beginning of 1992, Tod Ernst and Graham Ross began to imagine Planet Hair. With 24 years of combined experience, they felt they were ready to create a salon environment unique to Wichita.

Graham entered the salon industry because of his love of people and dreams of an exciting social life. With a natural ability with people, along with a strong entrepreneurial drive, Graham started his first business venture after four years as a stylist, Strands. . . A Salon, which he opened with two partners. After gaining some experience and growth as a business owner, Graham started dreaming of his vision of the perfect salon.

Tod is a creative visionary, drawn to the exciting, fast paced lifestyle of the fashion industry. While working at the Hair Force, he developed his creative niche in producing hair and make-up looks for theater, commercials, photo and catalog work, and his favorite outlet; fashion shows.  While working on his artistic and business abilities, Tod’s plan was to have his own business.

Graham and Tod, who had been friends for several years, started sharing their dreams with each other and discovered that their visions of the future were very compatible. As they became more excited about their vision and began to forge their plan, Linda Ernst, Tod’s wife, became an important part of making their dream a reality.

An artist herself, Linda had matured as a business person in the floral design business and was experienced in directing creative, service businesses.  Attracted to the operational aspects of the business, Linda joined the partnership and became the salon manager. She is the glue that holds the salon together.

It was their vision from the beginning to open a progressive salon downtown.  When Old Town was a ghost town, the partners looked at the space where Planet Hair is located today.  Sensing that the down town area was about to go through exciting growth, and ignoring people who warned them against it, the entrepreneurs took the risk and have never looked back. Along with the help of family, friends, and bankers, Planet Hair opened in November 1992.
