The Earth is our Muse

On Monday, April 4, Aveda salons around Wichita came together for the first ever for Catwalk for Water, an annual green carpet event to raise money for Earth Month.

The event showcased local Aveda salon’s inspiration, creativity and technical skills in hair, makeup and fashion, raising $15,000 for our local Aveda Earth Month partner, Audubon Kansas/Missouri to continue clean water efforts, to inform and insure clean and safe water for our future. Using the earth as their muse, design teams created comprehensive looks that celebrated beauty, fashion and Aveda’s mission to care for the world we live in.

Our team had a fantastic time creating two looks for the event, made from recycled materials.

For the Princess Warrior look, our team created an outfit made from beer bottle caps donated by The Anchor. The headdress was made with the inside part of Aveda color tubes, cut into flowers and butterflies and stacked on each other to form into a crown. More color tubes were cut like feathers and pasted to a mold using wire hangers to create the wings

We also created this Packing Paper Princess look, inspired by of Thrones meets Alice in Wonderland. Using a large hoop skirt as the framework, we ironed and folded recycled packing paper to create fans to attach to the skirt. The bodice used the same paper, cut in strips and woven together, to add another layer of texture. The headdress was designed by cutting and stacking toilet paper and paper towel rolls to create our rendition of the Queen of Hearts headdress.

We had an amazing time at Aveda Catwalk for Water – Wichita and our team was honored to win the Best Overall award for our Princess Warrior look!

Defining Color Terms

Have you noticed that there are a lot of new names for ways to color your hair, like Balayage, Ombre, Sombre? What does it all mean? Our education director and expert colorist, Hannah Brockman, has the answers:

Balayage (bah-lee-AHZGE)

Color1

From the French word, meaning “to sweep or paint,” color is applied to the hair with a freehand technique, painting on color to create soft highlights. This technique creates a natural sun-kissed look with less noticeable regrowth lines, making the color easy to maintain. Balayage is perfect for all hair types and lengths.

Ombre’ (äm’brā’)

Color2

Another French word, meaning “to shade,” this technique blends color or tones in a soft transition from dark to light. Usually, darker tones are applied closer to the root of the hair, with the color gradually lightening as it moves towards the end of the strand.  Reverse ombre’ is just the opposite, keeping lightness around the face with the tone becoming darker at the ends.  Ombre’ works best on longer hair lengths.

Sombre (säm’brā’)

Color3

What many are calling the next big trend in color, this technique takes ombre’ softer for a subtle blended graduation and a more natural look. Also called color melting, lighter pieces are taken up higher on the hair, especially around the face, with ribbons of color running through the lower lengths to enhance natural texture and layering in the cut. Still best on longer lengths of hair, the sombre technique is perfect for blondes and brunettes who want a softer transition into color.

Want to know which of these techniques will look the best on you? Our color consultations are always complimentary! So stop by or call us at 316-267-8000 to reserve a little time and talk to our expert stylists about updating your color.

Dress for Success Makeover Magic

For the tenth year in a row, Planet Hair was honored to participate in the Dress for Success Sisterhood of the Divine Makeover. We love being part of this event, a major fundraiser for this incredible organization that promotes economic independence and job placement for disadvantaged women.

Women who deserve a makeover are nominated before the event by friends, family and coworkers.  The winning nominees were given head-to-toe makeovers including hair, makeup, clothing and a whole new attitude, and were revealed at a luncheon sponsored by Via Christi at the Wichita Marriott on June 21.

It’s so much fun to see the difference a makeover can make, especially for such deserving women. Great job Tod!
