Wichita Art Museum Art Park Anniversary
Saturday, September 24 from 5 to 8 pm

We are honored to be invited back to participate in the Wichita Art Museum first anniversary party of the grand opening of their beautiful Art Garden. We had so much fun last year creating botanical hair styles for the opening party; we can’t wait to show you what we have planned for this year’s celebration! We’ve been challenged to come up with fashions that coincide with the opening of the new fall exhibit, Shiny, Sticky, Smooth: Pop Art and the Senses, so you know it’s going to be good. Evening festivities start at 5 pm with local food trucks and fun in the garden. We go on at 7 pm, with surprise musical entertainment to follow. The event is free, open to the public and includes free admission into the museum to see the new exhibit, so there’s no reason not to be there.

The Earth is our Muse

On Monday, April 4, Aveda salons around Wichita came together for the first ever for Catwalk for Water, an annual green carpet event to raise money for Earth Month.

The event showcased local Aveda salon’s inspiration, creativity and technical skills in hair, makeup and fashion, raising $15,000 for our local Aveda Earth Month partner, Audubon Kansas/Missouri to continue clean water efforts, to inform and insure clean and safe water for our future. Using the earth as their muse, design teams created comprehensive looks that celebrated beauty, fashion and Aveda’s mission to care for the world we live in.

Our team had a fantastic time creating two looks for the event, made from recycled materials.

For the Princess Warrior look, our team created an outfit made from beer bottle caps donated by The Anchor. The headdress was made with the inside part of Aveda color tubes, cut into flowers and butterflies and stacked on each other to form into a crown. More color tubes were cut like feathers and pasted to a mold using wire hangers to create the wings

We also created this Packing Paper Princess look, inspired by of Thrones meets Alice in Wonderland. Using a large hoop skirt as the framework, we ironed and folded recycled packing paper to create fans to attach to the skirt. The bodice used the same paper, cut in strips and woven together, to add another layer of texture. The headdress was designed by cutting and stacking toilet paper and paper towel rolls to create our rendition of the Queen of Hearts headdress.

We had an amazing time at Aveda Catwalk for Water – Wichita and our team was honored to win the Best Overall award for our Princess Warrior look!

Shaking it up with EarthQuake Recycled

On April 19th we rocked the Fisch Haus with our fundraiser, EarthQuake Recycled, raising over $4,000 towards Aveda’s global goal to raise $6.5 million for clean water projects. The proceeds will be coordinated through Global Greengrants Fund, a non-profit that channels high-impact grants to grassroots groups working to solve pressing environmental problems.

The evening included refreshments from Wichita restaurants Tanya’s Soup Kitchen, Picasso’s Pizza, Cow and Sow Deli, and Rain Café and Lounge along with beer and wine provided by Jacobs Liquor and bartending services by Tanya’s Soup Kitchen.

The silent auction was fun and exciting, with lots of competitive bidding. Artists John Ernatt, Kent Thomas Williams, Charlotte Martin, Jessica Reyes and others donated artwork for the fundraiser.  Local businesses Hatman Jack’s, the Candle Club, GreenAcres Market, Beard’s Floral Design, Valley Wholesale, Lucinda’s and others provided fabulous prizes for top bidders.

Local earth and wellness vendors, including the Bluestem Acupuncture Clinic of Kansas, Lloyd’s Natural Honey, EarthWise Pet Supply, Wichita Rain Barrels, GreenAcres Market & Deli and Aveda were on hand with information and demonstrations on easy, earth-friendly ways to make changes to help care for ourselves and the planet.

We wrapped up the evening with a fashion show of clothing made from recycled materials and wigs made from shredded paper by our talented team and costumes from past ArtAID performances. Check our their work below.

Special thanks to our staff, models, Aveda, Fisch Haus, Holly Friend, Julia Cherney, Julian Bartlett and Jill D. Miller for all their help making this event a success!

Dress for Success Makeover Magic

For the tenth year in a row, Planet Hair was honored to participate in the Dress for Success Sisterhood of the Divine Makeover. We love being part of this event, a major fundraiser for this incredible organization that promotes economic independence and job placement for disadvantaged women.

Women who deserve a makeover are nominated before the event by friends, family and coworkers.  The winning nominees were given head-to-toe makeovers including hair, makeup, clothing and a whole new attitude, and were revealed at a luncheon sponsored by Via Christi at the Wichita Marriott on June 21.

It’s so much fun to see the difference a makeover can make, especially for such deserving women. Great job Tod!

Sisterhood of the Divine Makeover

For the eighth year in a row, Planet Hair was honored to participate in the Dress for Success Sisterhood of the Divine Makeover. We love being part of this event, a major fundraiser for this incredible organization that promotes economic independence and job placement for disadvantaged women.

As one of the last big events before her recent retirement, Bonnie Bing asked people to nominate women they felt were deserving of a makeover through her column in the Wichita Eagle. The winning nominees were given head-to-toe makeovers including hair, makeup, clothing and a whole new attitude, and were revealed at a luncheon at the Wichita Marriott on June 23rd.

It’s so much fun to see the difference a makeover can make, especially for such deserving women.
