Strike a Pose!

We were thrilled to be part of the Fabulous Fashion Fete, a fun party to rock the opening of the Irving Penn, Beyond Beauty, photography exhibition at the Wichita Art Museum. We designed hairstyles and costumes, to mimic works by Irving Penn, one of the 20th-century masters of photography, whose work spanned commercial and artistic genres. Organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the photography show is on exhibit at the Wichita Art Museum through February 4, 2018.

Look What We’re Learning!

Our team loves to learn new trends and techniques! Recently we had Aveda educators Alberto Rossell-Davis (color artist) and Susan Ford (cutting artist) in the salon for an inspirational class to help push our creativity, in both hair cutting and color. We learned some fun new geometric cutting and coloring techniques that mimic a prismatic effect to create three dimensional colors that shift in perspective when viewed from different angles. We had a blast and can’t wait to try out our new techniques!

The Earth is our Muse

On Monday, April 4, Aveda salons around Wichita came together for the first ever for Catwalk for Water, an annual green carpet event to raise money for Earth Month.

The event showcased local Aveda salon’s inspiration, creativity and technical skills in hair, makeup and fashion, raising $15,000 for our local Aveda Earth Month partner, Audubon Kansas/Missouri to continue clean water efforts, to inform and insure clean and safe water for our future. Using the earth as their muse, design teams created comprehensive looks that celebrated beauty, fashion and Aveda’s mission to care for the world we live in.

Our team had a fantastic time creating two looks for the event, made from recycled materials.

For the Princess Warrior look, our team created an outfit made from beer bottle caps donated by The Anchor. The headdress was made with the inside part of Aveda color tubes, cut into flowers and butterflies and stacked on each other to form into a crown. More color tubes were cut like feathers and pasted to a mold using wire hangers to create the wings

We also created this Packing Paper Princess look, inspired by of Thrones meets Alice in Wonderland. Using a large hoop skirt as the framework, we ironed and folded recycled packing paper to create fans to attach to the skirt. The bodice used the same paper, cut in strips and woven together, to add another layer of texture. The headdress was designed by cutting and stacking toilet paper and paper towel rolls to create our rendition of the Queen of Hearts headdress.

We had an amazing time at Aveda Catwalk for Water – Wichita and our team was honored to win the Best Overall award for our Princess Warrior look!

Going Back to our Roots

Thanks to all of out fabulous clients and talented staff for 22 years in business! To celebrate they thought we’d post some pictures what it all looked like in the beginning. Here’s to the memories from 1992!

Painting the mural was a big job! Part of the reason we picked our location at Douglas & Emporia was our dream of having a fun mural.

Planet Hair at Congress

Planet Hair Team at Congress Festival

We had a fantastic time at Aveda’s International Congress Festival, a spectacular three day educational event in Minneapolis, Minnesota! The classes were out of this world. Our entire team has come back feeling inspired and excited about the new trends and techniques we learned in cutting and coloring. We can’t wait to show you try out what we’ve learned from our hands-on experiences.

We especially loved the Grand Finale Evening Performance that Aveda’s Global Artistic Team put together. The fashion show featured more than 40 models and performers in an exciting performance merging circus with fashion. Check out the pictures on Aveda’s behind the scenes blog.

The Dapper Dad

Although men’s hairstyles don’t change as dramatically as women’s from season to season, there are a couple of men’s trends that are going to stand head and shoulders about the rest this summer.

Slicked back

The Great Gatsby movie is a big influence in fashion for men this summer. Hair for guys is very groomed and clean, even slicked back with a move toward side parts for a refined, formal look. We’ll see a lot more shine, using pomades and gloss products to finish the style and keep it looking great all day.

Not SlickedThe alternative to this buttoned-down style keeps the sides closely trimmed, but leaves the hair longer, and more textured on top, for a taller “bed-head” look or a smoothed pompadour. To add more personality to the cut, color can be smudged through the tips towards the front to give it a shot of character and individuality.

facial hairOf course, one of the biggest trends for men is facial hair. Beards and mustaches are everywhere and sideburns are getting longer and fuller. Looks that range from clean and short to wild, pre-civil war serious facial hair are all the rage, allowing men to be creative with their style.
